Jerrabomberra Wetlands
Nestled between the man-made Lake Burley Griffin and one of Canberra’s industrial suburbs is a surprise patch of pastoral lands and wetlands.
The Jerrabomberra Wetlands Nature Reserve feels like it shouldn’t be here - a 10 to 15 minute drive from the heart of Canberra itself, an airport to the east - a patch of calm just waiting. You can easily see Parliament House and Black Mountain Tower to the west.
The paved sections are used by cyclists, joggers and walkers - cycling and jogging is actively discouraged on the dirt paths that enter the wetlands so the birdlife (170+ species have been recorded) isn’t terrorised.
As well as the wide variety of birdlife, there’s kangaroos, turtles and the sound of frogs (I assume there’s actually frogs but they’re very elusive).
There’s some nearby cattle and here is where my story takes a heart-breaking turn… well, just watch.
Another cow had already accepted my offering but of course the video of that one was terrible. Though still better than my usual efforts to entice cows to say ‘hello’ (which are generally met with complete indifference or abject horror).
Free parking is available at the end of Dairy Flat Road in Fyshwick (map pins below); you can also approach from the Kingston side (Eyre Street).
