When the ravens call

I innocently posted a reel on Instagram (@timbeyan) of two Australian Ravens at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, a short distance southwest of Canberra. The ravens had come down to see if I had any food (I didn’t) and then hung around for lots of photos and some videos.

At one point, the ravens began calling out; was it to tell their buddies the human didn’t have snacks? Wait, was I the snack?

The reel proved popular - and as someone pointed out, the ravens sounded distinctly Australian (is this where we get the long vowel accent from?).

The ravens were quite content to stick around and show off, there was no timidity about interacting with humans. They checked the pockets of my camera bag (clearly looking for any food I might be carrying).

Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve is located close to Canberra, Australia’s capital. A day or annual pass is needed to access the majority of the reserve but if you want to experience a fair chunk of Australia’s wildlife (kangaroos, koalas, platypus, an emu if you’re lucky), it’s definitely worth a visit. There’s no bins so please take your rubbish back out of the reserve with you.
